Wakesurfing on Deep Creek Lake - Railey Realty Blog

Mike Kennedy commented recently on wakesurfing on the Railey Realty blog, which is a sport I have yet to try...but it seems fun!

One of the great benefits of owning a vacation home and real estate at Deep Creek Lake are all the great activities you and family members can experience. Wakesurfing is fast becoming one of the most popular water sports activities to do on the lake. Wakesurfing is essentially surfing in the wake created by the boat. A wakesurf board is basically a smaller version of a regular ocean surfboard and does not have bindings for your feet. To get up, you start in the water behind the boat in a seated position with your heels on top of the board. While holding a specially designed wakesurf rope the boat then pulls you up. After you are up, you can then pull yourself towards the front of the boat’s wake. After you “catch the wake” and start surfing you can then throw the rope into the back of the boat. The wake created by the boat mimics the look and feel of an actual ocean wave.

Reinstatement of highway, police subsidies sought

OCEAN CITY -- The association of Maryland's cities and towns wants Gov. Martin O'Malley to undo steep cuts in state subsidies.

The Maryland Municipal League will lobby hard for the return of state highway user fees and police aid dollars to the municipalities, said Executive Director Scott Hancock. MML members will make it their "highest priority" so the towns that have depended on those funds can keep their budgets afloat, he added.

Legislators slashed those funding sources to towns by 90 percent, as part of continuing efforts to balance the state's budget. State revenue shortfalls of more than $1 billion a year are projected through 2015, according to the Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute.....

The cash crisis has some small towns in Garrett County in Western Maryland considering disincorporating as municipalities, Hancock added, though he did not specify which towns.

Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center - Photos

Here are some more cool photos that we took at the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center last week:

There are so many cool things to do there, interesting activities scheduled almost every day and the setting is amazing. I promised Noah to take him back to the kids corner to play with the BIG turtle...I also noticed a chart tracking the sightings of 2 bald eagles that were observed flying and touching talons - apparently, it was a sign of kinship amongst the birds. Interesting stuff at the DCL Discovery Center!! More from their website:

The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center, the Department of Natural Resources' interpretive environmental center along the shores of Deep Creek Lake at Deep Creek Lake State Park. The Discovery Center is a one-of-a-kind educational venue for people of all ages. Through hands-on exhibits that showcase the natural resources of Western Maryland, families can learn about the flora and fauna, wildlife, cultural and historical heritage that have turned this former logging and coal mining region into a popular modern day vacation destination.

Through colorful artwork, photographs and artifacts, the facility's numerous natural resources exhibits provide a behind the scenes look into Deep Creek Lake and its watershed, industrial development in the area, and conservation issues facing the region today. History buffs will enjoy learning about the cultural and historical heritage of the region, including coal extraction from the former Old Brant Mine, and the role the mighty Youghiogheny River played in timber logging at the turn of the century. The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center also features an aquarium with native fish and other aquatic species from the lake and river, and a raised relief map that gives visitors a unique perspective of the mountainous terrain.

On-site naturalists, rangers and volunteers lead daily educational programs, from leisurely hikes that focus on birdwatching, tree identification and wildflowers, to more extensive educational programming that touches on such subjects as black bear management, endangered species of the Youghiogheny area, submerged aquatic vegetation, boating safety, and trail stewardship.

The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center's 6,000 square foot facility also includes a classroom and conference areas complete with audio visual technology that is available for rent for use for educational purposes. Don't forget to stop by the Nature Shop, where you'll find a variety of environmental and educational gifts including toys, souvenirs from the region, field guides, and books with natural resource themes.

Don't forget to check out the LIVE Fish Cam that was donated by the Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers, Inc. The camera is located underwater near the Discovery Center. A TV in the Discovery Center shows the LIVE feed and what fish are moving around underwater that day. Anglers stop at the Discovery Center to check on the fish because Christmas trees line the shores of the park creating excellent habitat and try to name the fishes spotted on the screen. Watch a video of our LIVE Fish Cam.
Deep Creek Lake State Park is located at 898 State Park Road in Swanton, Maryland.

Spontaneous style defines watercolor artist’s work

Great article about Robert Yonke, Garrett County painter:
It took a mixture of music and technology to jump-start Robert Yonke’s art career, and the better part of a lifetime for him to develop the water color creations that are now his trademark.

“I have always been in the game,” Yonke, a Garrett County Md. and Pittsburgh resident, said of painting.

He was painting in the late 1960s while in the advertising business. He put brush to paper in the 1990s around the time he was in construction. Now the art form is his focus.

A few years ago Yonke’s daughter, Becky Sciullo, started posting her father’s paintings on a website with bluegrass music. Soon after a Nashville, Tenn., music association asked him to paint images of bands for promotion.

Other states pollute bay but don’t pay a ‘flush tax’

I found this letter to the editor of the Cumberland Times today and found it appealing:

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

Our legislators decided to clean up the bay with federal money. Every resident in this state pays a “flush tax” bill. The flush tax has been one of Gov. Robert Ehrlich’s key legislative accomplishments.

The environmentalists have “cheered” it because it provides a means to reduce pollution from sewage treatment plants, which are key sources of nutrients that spur algae growth and, in turn, rob oxygen from bay water.

Three cities on the Eastern Shore have benefited from this tax. They are Elkton, Kent Island, and St. Michaels. Elkton officials reversed a policy against annexing land for development as soon as the town received $7.5 million from the Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay Restoration fund, which provides grants for sewage treatment improvements paid for by the tax.

A few days later, Elkton’s mayor signed an agreement allowing 2,500 homes to be built on cornflelds, wetlands, and woods next to a bay tributary. Everyone knows sewage rolls downhill. The sewage of the citizens, who live beyond the Continental Divide in Garrett County and are on septic tanks, flows into the Mississippi.

Senator George Edwards has informed me that the state of West Virginia is the biggest contributor of pollution to the bay.

The state of Pennsylvania has two sewer rivers running to the bay. Three dams are located on one of these rivers. The environment has estimated approximately 250 million tons of sludge has accumulated in these dams and nothing has been done yet to correct this problem.

I asked our western Maryland legislators these two questions: 1) If the surrounding states, which have contributed to the pollution of the bay pay no tax, then why do the citizens of Maryland? 2) What type of fraud or extortion is this? These questions have never been answered.

It saddens me to watch the arrogant spending of our tax dollars. I believe all of our politicians are out of control. What has happened to the common sense? Remember one thing, 150 years ago Jesse James stole with a six-gun and behind a mask. In today’s society our politicians do it with an ink pen and a smile and call it “taxes.”

What a joke we have become.

Abe Clark - Running across America

Support the Republiucan Newspaper! It's only $9.95/year for the online edition!

and passing through Garrett County last Friday on his way from California to Atlantic City, N.J., was Abe Clark, a 24-year-old resident of Wisconsin. Clark is hoping to arrive in Atlantic City next Wednesday, completing a distance of nearly 3,000 miles and an estimated 4,000,000 steps. He also pushes a three-wheeled cart that carries various supplies. His effort to date has raised over $76,000 which will be given to Living Water International, a non-profit foundation that helps supply fresh water to people in Third World nations, with a current focus on Haiti following that nation's devastating earthquake. Clark, who was a high school and collegiate runner, said that it was "a sense of adventure, a love of distance running, and a desire to help others" that motivated him to do this. While he has managed to make the excursion without injury, other than a few blisters, he nearly lost his life in New Mexico during a major snowstorm in February. He survived by building a snow cave and spending some 16 hours in it until the storm subsided. His 136-day run was also interrupted by the death of his grandfather, which took him off his course and back to Wisconsin for about three days. Persons who would like to make a donation to his cause can do so online by logging on to www.runningwater.cc. "I hope my actions will encourage others to join me in the race for clean water. I believe most people take fresh water for granted and are unaware of the shortages around the world," Clark said. Abe's father Mike, a cross country coach, was with him during his overnight stop in Oakland.

The Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) will host the first of two national caliber competitions this weekend.
The U.S. Canoe and Kayak Whitewater Slalom "Age Group" National Championships combine the Junior and Masters/Legend national championships, and will be held on Sunday morning, June 27.

"It's a serious race for the kids, and a weekend warrior contest of words and occasionally amazing deeds for the old folks," said one veteran slalom racer.

The Age Group Nationals is open to the public and will occur from 7 to 11 a.m. on Sunday. Whitewater rafting trips will be available Sunday after the race for anyone who would like to ride the same rapids.

Members of the 2010 U.S. Junior National Team will earn National Champion titles, and a number of the athletes may go on to the Olympics.

Racing this weekend will be young athletes from as far as Washington state, Colorado, and throughout the East Coast. In particular, the Maryland-based "Bethesda Center for Excellence" (BCE) team, coached by 1989 World Champion silver medalist and two-time Olympic medalist Dana Chladek, will field a full team. BCE is also helping to organize and co-host the event with ASCI.
