As temperature drops, ice fishing heating up

Brrrr…Brrrr…Brrrr.

This remarkable cold spell has not done a lot to contain my wood or heating oil use, but it has produced a dazzling early-winter season of ice fishing. Heck, up above Scranton, ice fishing actually began several days before last week's official start of winter. That is remarkable.

To dole out some important ice information first, the trout stocking at Lower Lake at Promised Land State Park, originally scheduled for early November, has been completely cancelled. The 173-acre lake is being drawn-down. Read the full article here.

Check out Deep Creek Lake ice fishing.

Ice fishing on Deep Creek Lake - 1-11-10

I noticed these folks fishing outside my office window today in McHenry Cove. From what I understand, the lake is definitely safe for ice-fishing now after almost 3 weeks of sub freezing temperatures. You can see the community of Ski Harbor in the background, and the approximate location of where the ice starts and land stops.
I have a 2 bedroom condo available for sale at Ski Harbor, a lakefront townhouse community with an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and beach volleyball court. You can find some more info about the community here.

Fish Tales on Deep Creek Lake

Ice fishing: It's a simple-enough concept. Grab a fishing pole, some bait, a bucket to sit on (or use a fish house, in the proper conditions) and stay on a frozen lake for hours.

You may not think that ice fishing in the East is as big of a deal as it is to, let's say, a Minnesotan, contrary to belief we've seen some hardcore anglers on the lakes nearby.

Take, for instance, Deep Creek Lake State Park (898 State Park Road, Swanton, Md., 170 miles from D.C.). It's the state's largest fresh body of water, with 69 miles of shoreline and abundant populations of bass and walleye. It's also well-stocked with yellow perch, bluegill and sunfish.

Our Bay: DNR Digest

ASK AN EXPERT

What fishing opportunities are available in the winter?

Although many people tend to think of fishing in Maryland as a warm-weather activity, there are plenty of opportunities to be had during the winter months.

Excellent trout fishing may be found in many of the waters in the western and central regions of the state. Deep Creek Lake is known for the good ice fishing for yellow perch, walleye and numerous other freshwater species.

The winter months are a great time to target chain pickerel in open water ponds, small lakes and the upper regions of tidal rivers and creeks. Often these areas are thick with grass beds during the warmer months, but make for great fishing during winter.

Maryland anglers are fortunate to have good fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass and muskellunge in the upper Potomac River. These coldwater fish can provide a lot of action from shore or small boats.

Ice sculptor keeps his cool on warm day

Frozen figurines dot streets of Oakland
Michael A. Sawyers
Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News Sun Feb 20, 2011, 07:53 AM EST

— OAKLAND — Bill Sandusky was as frustrated as an ice sculptor on a warm day.

And it’s no wonder, because that’s just what he was on Saturday in downtown Oakland.

The temperatures in the high 40s made it impossible for Sandusky to show off details on his frozen figurines such as the brim on a woman’s hat, the hair on a boy reading a book, the mane of a horse, a fishing pole held by a lad.

“It’s just too warm, especially on the sunny side of the street,” Sandusky said. “The sculptures on the shady side will last longer,” he said, pointing to his works across Second Street.

This is the fourth year in Oakland at the Winter Fest for the peripatetic wielder of chainsaws, burrs and brushes. He is an Erie, Pa., native now living near Colorado Springs, Colo. The name of his endeavor is The Frozen Assets Ice Carving Co.

And get this, his day job is as a tractor-trailer driver for Reddy Ice out of Dallas. BYOI is not a problem.

After only a few touches of a chain saw to a large block of ice, onlooker Allison Carl, 7, of York, Pa., figured it out.

“It’s a boy reading a book,” she said, realizing that the sculpture was outside of The Book Mark’et and putting two and two together.

A week ago Sandusky was doing his gelid thing in Old Colorado City. A week from now he will be in Alaska, competing in an international ice sculpturing event.

“His work is amazing,” said Roger McClung of Washington, who has a second home in Deer Park and drives westward every weekend to Garrett County. “The sculpture of the train down by the depot has great detail.”

A group of about 30 onlookers was showered often by flying ice dust as Sandusky applied his chainsaw to frozen hunks. Still-cameras clicked and video cameras whirred.

Sandusky has been turning blocks of ice into treasure chests (in front of banks), smartly dressed women (in front of a fashion shops), and steeds (near the horse and carriage stop) for two decades.

“The ideal temperature is 25, but I’ve carved in temperatures as high as 86 in Pennsylvania and as low as 42-below in Alaska,” he said.

“When it gets that cold it can be dangerous,” he said. “You have to add alcohol to the water you work with so it won’t freeze to your skin.”

Friday was even warmer in Oakland than Saturday.

“We got a late start and that backed us up,” Sandusky said.

Although he had planned to begin carving early Friday, he waited until 10 p.m. for cooler temperatures and worked well into the night.

Sunday, Sandusky will carve a final ice statue, at the gazebo in Oakland.

Despite recession, Garrett County housing market still lively

Courtesy of the Daily Record:

Although Garrett County justifiably bills itself as a year-round resort, it definitely is the place in Maryland when it comes to winter recreation, largely thanks to the presence of Wisp Ski Resort and its proximity to other skiing venues in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

In addition to downhill and cross-country skiing, WISP’s winter activities include snowshoeing and tubing. Deep Creek Lake features ice fishing. And winter sleigh rides are available too.

Nor surprisingly, the most desirable property is waterfront on Deep Creek Lake. In mid-December there were 49 lakefront properties on the market with prices ranging from $499,000 to $2.99 million.

At the low end is a lakefront cottage with three bedrooms and three baths with 163 feet of level lakefront. The opposite extreme? A three-level property with seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, one half-bath and five fireplaces, sitting on three-quarters of an acre.

Fathers Day at Deep Creek Lake 2008

I enjoyed a wonderful Fathers Day at Deep Creek Lake State Park over the weekend. We went for a picnic on Sunday and hung out near the state park beach. My daughter Kayleah played on the rocks and searched for different kinds of bugs and creepy cralwies. My grand parents were with me, as well as my in-laws. It was about 85 degrees and sunny, and the water is almost warm enough that it doesn't take your breath when you jump in...almost.

After the picnic, we went took the boat down to a friends house at Turkey Neck. There was a sailboat race in progress and we decided to do a little bit of fishing from the dock. I personally didn't catch anything, but I did witness my cousin lose a 12" bass as she tried to pull it up out of the water...it was entertaining, to say the least.

We wrapped up a sun filled day with some dinner from Grizzly Grillin & some ice cream from the Creamery (thanks for the Fathers Day FREE scoop, by the way!). Coconut & chocolate butter fudge go together better than you would imagine. I also have it on good authority that Bill Meagher, the owner of the Creamery, is working on beer flavored ice cream...stay tuned!
