Del. Wendell R. Beitzel (R–Dist. 1A) and Sen. George C. Edwards (R– Dist. 1) joined many local people last Friday in requesting that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) give the residents of Garrett County a choice when it comes to their local television options.
Because of FCC designated marketing area rules, most Garrett County residents receive Pennsylvania TV stations, rather than Maryland ones, from cable and satellite companies.
Beitzel and Edwards introduced joint resolutions in the Maryland General Assembly for consideration in their respective chambers. House Joint Resolution 2, sponsored by Beitzel, was assigned to the House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee, which has not yet set a hearing date.
Senate Joint Resolution 2, sponsored by Edwards, was assigned to the Senate Finance Committee, which will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m.
In a recent letter sent to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, Beitzel commented, "This is not just a mild inconvenience for the people who may be Baltimore Ravens or Washington Redskins fans. There is a more troubling byproduct."
