Home prices unchanged in January: S&P

NEW YORK | Tue Mar 27, 2012 9:41am EDT

(Reuters) - Single-family home prices were unchanged in January, a closely watched survey said on Tuesday, suggesting the battered housing market continues to crawl along the bottom.

The S&P/Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas was flat in January on a seasonally adjusted basis. A Reuters poll of economists forecast a decline of 0.2 percent after December's 0.5 percent drop.

The flat reading broke a five-month string of declines as the market has been pressured by a low demand, distressed sales and an overhang of pending foreclosures.

Home prices rose in May: CoreLogic

NEW YORK | Thu Jun 30, 2011 9:02am EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Home prices rose for the second month in a row in May but fell compared to a year earlier, data analysis company CoreLogic said on Thursday.

CoreLogic's home price index rose 0.8 percent in May from the month before, though prices were still down 7.4 percent from a year ago. Excluding distressed sales, prices declined just 0.4 percent year-over-year.

Relative strength in the non-distressed market, a slow decline in the number of homes expected to go on the market -- known as shadow inventory -- and stabilization in the amount of underwater homeowners are all positive signs, said Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic.

"Nonetheless, the fragile economic recovery is still critical to the long-term recovery in the housing market," Fleming said in a statement.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Home prices hit another new low in the first quarter, down 5.1% from a year ago to levels not reached since 2002.

It was the third straight quarterly drop for the S&P/Case-Shiller national home price index, which was released Tuesday.

Prices are now down 32.7% from their peak set five years ago.

"Home prices continue on their downward spiral with no relief in sight," said David Blitzer, spokesman for Standard and Poor's.

The index covers 80% of the housing market, and this month's report confirmed "a double-dip in home prices across much of the nation," said Blitzer.

Drop in home prices raises fear of double dip

By Elizabeth Razzi, Tuesday, March 29, 4:26 PM
Home prices dropped in nearly all major housing markets in the country in January, according to price index numbers released Tuesday. Analysts said the decrease may be a harbinger of a double-dip recession in the housing market.

According to the Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller Home Price Index, only two markets in its survey of 20 cities bucked the trend and posted year-over-year price gains, Washington, D.C., and San Diego.

The Washington area recorded a 3.6 percent annual growth rate for home prices in January. San Diego, the only other metro area to register an annual price increase, saw a gain of just 0.1 percent. The D.C. area was the only one to register a price increase compared with the month before, with a scant 0.1 percent price gain.

The S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city composite index fell 3.1 percent from its January,
2010, level. The 10-city index declined 2 percent.
