Redtail Hawk Hits The Courts

Jul. 12, 2012

"Tennis, anyone?" might be the question that was on the mind of this wayward redtail hawk that was perched on one of the benches at the Mountain Lake Park Tennis Club courts on Monday. The bird had apparently sustained some kind of injury to its wing and was having difficulty flying.

MLP town secretary Judy Paugh contacted officials from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, who came to the courts, successfully corralled the bird, and have sent it to rehabilitation experts who will attempt to nurse it back to health before returning it to the wild. Photo courtesy

A Quiet Moment Along The Savage

This river's name does not seem appropriate for this particular scene. The Savage River was anything but savage when captured in this photograph by artist Michael Petersheim. The shot is part of an exhibit of his work now on display at the Gallery Shop in downtown Oakland.

"The Nature of Summer" display is being hosted by the Garrett County Arts Council, which will also host a reception for Petersheim at the gallery on April 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until May 18 and is open during normal Gallery Shop hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Petersheim is a native of western Maryland and grew up on farm just south of Oakland. His love of photography developed in 2004, he said, while living and studying at the University of Queensland in Australia. See story on today's arts page. A Rare Visitor

Genuine winter weather, usually a given in Garrett County, has become a rare visitor this year. The usual weeks of ongoing snow and ice are just not happening, allowing residents to save a bundle in heating costs, and the county roads department to stay well within its budget so far. Snow did come down in the traditional Mountaintop fashion on Saturday, though, resulting in nearly a foot of the drifting white stuff.

But the warmth returned soon after, and today is a rainy February day. The temps are to remain in the 40s until Sunday, when more snow is predicted. Winter Fest is set in Oakland this weekend, and usually is in the midst of cold and snow. This year might be a little warmer, but the celebration is set to go on anyway, and all are invited to come out and have some wintertime fun. Photo by Lisa Broadwater.

Bambi Spotting?

A sure sign of spring is the arrival of various young wildlife babies throughout the forests and in the fields. Jessica Capan was horseback riding along Herrington Manor Road recently and caught sight of this spotted youngster lying low in the grass, and unlike most "children," he remained perfectly still for the taking of this photograph. With the arrival of summer this week, most of the spots on baby deer are beginning to fade, but as always, motorists should remain alert for the road crossings of deer, bear, ground hogs, and a host of other critters.

A Regal Pose - The Republican News

Posing regally in an icy-limbed forest was this American bald eagle, photographed recently in the Friendsville area by Friendsville resident Jesse Whittemore. With Presidents' Day just around the corner, one can't help but marvel at the resiliency of not only this national symbol but also of the United States and its people. The bald eagle was on the brink of extirpation in the lower 48 states not too long ago. But after much hard work and determination by many citizens, eagle populations recovered and stabilized – so much so that in 2007, the eagle was removed from the federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States. Americans can once again view this magnificent creature and emblem in many areas of their nation, including Garrett County.

Survival of the Fittest - Deep Creek Lake

Finding a drink of water has been a bit of a challenge of late for those in the wildlife community, as this muskrat was observed lapping up a cold swig from frozen Deep Creek Lake this week. The little furry fellow was watched and photographed by John Mogle, Salisbury, and family, and the photo was submitted by John's brother Tom Mogle, who resides in Cumberland. The Mogles were staying in a rental unit along old Rt. 219/Deep Creek Drive. The muskrat was spotted on the ice where the roadway crosses a small patch of the lake. "We kept tabs on the fella the entire holiday weekend," said John Mogle. The high temperature for every day of December until this week has remained below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but a warm-up – with some rain – if forecast for the next few days.

Swooping In For A Coot Snack - Republican

Nov. 25, 2010

Eagles in Garrett County are on the prowl this time of the year for whatever variety of migrating bird happens to be taking a break on the surface of Deep Creek Lake. Pete Versteegen watched the eagle try to grab one of these traveling American coots. Versteegen said this is the third year in a row he has watched the eagles go after this particular water fowl. He has seen the eagles catch large fish, and one time did witness the great bird flying off with a coot. This year the eagle was unsuccessful. "It tried unsuccessfully for about 45 minutes. After 15 minutes it sat in a tree along the shore, resting, and looking for about 10 minutes," Versteegen said. "At one time it dove after a coot, but missed it, and then sat in the water like a duck for about three minutes before taking off again." The great bird eventually gave up and moved on. Versteegen said the photo was taken from his deck with a 300mm lens. Another bird will be "enjoyed" this week by millions of Americans — the turkey, which Benjamin Franklin thought should be the country's official bird instead of the one shown here. To all our readers we wish a very happy Thanksgiving.

The Last Hues Of Fall

Only spots of subdued color remain in the landscape now, as the brightest red and orange leaves have long since dropped from branches and lie in piles of rust and brown. November definitely gives a new look — that of pending winter, of which residents will get a taste this weekend, with a few inches of the sometimes-dreaded snow in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. But then the temp is to go back up next week, with next Wednesday predicted to be sunny and 60. Photo by Lisa Broadwater.

At first glance, a viewer may think this is a nice photograph of the Casselman Bridge, but upon further examination, one may be surprised to realize it is an acrylic painting. Local artist Joseph N. Miller created the work, and it is now on display at the Art Gallery of Garrett College. An exhibit of several of Miller's recent acrylic paintings will run through Nov. 23 at the gallery, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and during special events on weekends and evenings. The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A native of western Pennsylvania, Miller's ancestors were among the first to settle in the Springs, Pa., area. He said while he was growing up there, his parents fostered his interest in nature and the outdoors. His early attempts at painting while in middle and high school were encouraged by Laura Brown and Greg Bobick. The artist, who is largely self-taught, began to seriously pursue painting in 2006. "The [acrylic] medium's flexibility is liberating – allowing me to match the qualities of oil painting while offering advantages in drying time, toxicity, and variety of technique," Miller said. He holds a bachelor of science degree in biology, and masters' degrees in ecology and landscape architecture. This exhibition is made possible in part by a grant from the Garrett County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council. For more information, persons may contact the art department at 301-387-3024 or e-mail ron.skidmore@garrettcollege.edu

Foggy morning on 4th Street in Oakland

Not too long ago, I took this amazing photo of the fog lifting with the sun starting to peek through near the hospital on 4th street...anyway, I found it today and I wanted to share.
