One time Southern High School standout Sarah Stephens, who became an All-American at Frostburg State University, is among the top 30 honorees for the 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The NCAA?Woman of the Year award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academic achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership.

Stephens, a star dual-sport athlete (volleyball and tennis) for FSU, made the top 30 after the NCAA selected her from among 141 conference nominations. She is one of 10 Division III representatives. The 30 finalists are composed of 10 student-athletes from each NCAA division.

In the next round of selections, nine finalists, three from each division, will be chosen from the top 30 by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics and all 30 student-athletes will be honored at an awards dinner on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Indianapolis. The NCAA will announce the three finalists in September prior to the awards dinner.

Stephens graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She achieved a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average and was on the FSU dean's list for eight consecutive semesters. She was also named a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American last fall and was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society in 2009.

"We Are The Champions!"

Three members of the Southern High School wrestling team returned to Garrett County this past weekend with individual state high school wrestling championships under their belts. The center podium was a familiar spot for both Jakob "Bubba" Scheffel, above left, and Lex Ozias, above right, as these were the third consecutive titles earned by each of them in their careers as Southern Rams. Gaining what could be the first of multiple state championships was Ram freshman Coy Ozias, brother of Lex, who is pictured below (click on the photos above to make photo visible) just after winning his title bout. Scheffel and Lex Ozias also now have the distinction of holding the #1 and #2 spots, respectively, for the total number of career wins by any public school wrestler in the history of Maryland.

Apr. 29, 2010

The Garrett County commissioners held a staff meeting on Tuesday, hearing reports from leaders of 15 county departments and agencies. Topics reviewed included the Southern High School mercury incident, snow removal statistics, early voting, alcohol sales compliance checks, and wind turbine construction.

Health Department

Health officer Rodney Glotfetly reported that cooperation and preparation are playing key roles in the successful handling of the mercury release problem at Southern High School. The incident occurred last Wednesday.

Glotfelty said the Health Department would not have been able to respond to the incident if it had not spent some of its federal emergency preparedness funding to train Craig Umble. The training has enabled the environmental sanitarian to handle situations involving hazardous materials, such as mercury, and other environmental emergencies.

"We had great confidence when it was reported to us that there had been a possible mercury incident out at the school, that we could send Craig out and that he could assess the situation, get the area quarantined as fast as possible, and do whatever else we needed to manage the incident," Glotfelty said.

Brutus Scheffel Wins 4th Straight State Championship

Support the Republican Newspaper! Buy an online membership!

There was no prouder grandfather in the state of Maryland on Saturday than George Scheffel Sr. of Oakland, who is pictured congratulating his grandson George III – also known as Brutus – after the Southern High School senior won his fourth straight Maryland high school wrestling championship, a feat that had been accomplished by only three other wrestlers in the history of the state tournament. The icing on the cake for George Sr. was that Jakob "Bubba" Scheffel, younger brother of Brutus, claimed his second state title, as did teammates Lex Ozias and Davey Stewart. The four individual titles, plus a runner-up win by Ryan Bennett, gave the Rams their second consecutive team state championship.
