Early Spring

The earliest spring most can remember has taken place in Garrett County this year, with trees and flowers in full bloom almost a month before their usual explosions of color.

Fruit growers fret over early spring

By Timothy B. Wheeler, The Baltimore Sun

4:07 p.m. EDT, March 25, 2012

Just as they do every April, the fruit orchards at Larriland Farm have donned their spring finery.

The plum trees at the pick-your-own place in western Howard County sport brilliant white blossoms, while the peach trees are decked out in bright pink.

Thing is, it's still March.

True Sign Of Spring - Republican Newspaper

A search for a favorite harbinger of spring was rewarded last Saturday to Mtn. Lake Park resident and wildlife photographer Fran Pope. What she was looking for, and found, was this "mourning cloak" butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa) resting in a sunny spot in the Potomac State Forest. Adult mourning cloaks are probably the longest-lived butterfly in North America, Pope said, some surviving in excess of 10 months. Often the species is the first butterfly seen in the spring because they overwinter as adults. This one shows a little wear and tear, Pope noted, but not so bad for spending a cold winter tucked into a safe place in the woods, perhaps a hollow tree. Mourning cloaks, which in 2001 were named the Montana state butterfly, are found almost everywhere throughout North America and range south to central Mexico. Hopefully he will weather today's chilly temps and flurries, which are to continue on and off for several days.

Spring is 'here to stay' according to observers

Despite a long and stormy winter, weather experts say spring is officially here to stay in Somerset County.

Warmer temperatures, melting snow and chirping birds are all indications that Punxsutawney Phil’s early spring prediction is proving true – and just in time for the season’s official beginning yesterday...

...Some areas, such as Deep Creek Lake, Md., received up to 250 inches of snow two years ago.

Snowdrops Of A Different Sort

While most folks on the mountaintop sigh at the thought of more snow, they most likely are happy to welcome these particular snowdrops. The cheery little flowers are definite harbingers of spring, and are popping up, at last, across the county. And they are dressed in green, appropriate for St. Patrick's Day. The temps are warm today, and there is no sign of real snow anywhere in the forecast over the next week. Let the snowdrops — the growing ones — keep coming! Photo by Lisa Rook.

What a difference 2 weeks makes - Stockslager Area Deep Creek Lake

A few weeks ago, I took these pics of the Stockslager Rd area as the lake level was lowered (because of flooding risks) and there was still ice and snow everywhere. Well, today I went back and saw just how much the lake has risen in just a few short weeks:
