Businesses taking action following Deep Creek Lake zoning decision

Lakeside Creamery to rent boats, provide tours

Elaine Blaisdell Cumberland Times-News

OAKLAND — St. Moritz Properties, LLC; Bill’s Marine Service Inc. and Silver Tree Marine, LLC, are filing a petition for judicial review in regard to the Garrett County Commission’s decision in June to amend the Deep Creek Watershed zoning ordinance, according to circuit court documents.

The request from Bill Meagher, owner of Lakeside Creamery, was to add a new category for boat rentals as a separate service that would not offer any other services associated with a marina.

The businesses filed the petition because they felt like they have been “specially and adversely affected” by the commissioners’ decision, according to the document.

“The above-captioned petitioners have and will continue to suffer additional damages to a higher degree than other property owners in the general area as a result of the use of Meagher’s property ... and the additional boat traffic, safety issues and parking problems generated thereby,” states the document.

During a June 5 meeting, chairman Jim Raley opposed the amendment, citing concerns over Meagher’s desire not to to offer services on-site. Meagher plans to rent out 12 personal water crafts and four pontoon boats as well as offer guided tours.

The three businesses also appealed the county’s board of zoning appeals approval of permit for Meagher to conduct a commercial-business service at the Lakeside Creamery. Both the petition and the appeal were filed through the law office of Skidmore Alderson & Duncan.

Brian C. O’Brien of Silver Tree Marine, declined to comment on the petition or the appeal but noted they were public record and stated, “the appeal and the petition are what they are. They are pretty self explanatory.”

The board of zoning appeals is required to make a Findings of Facts before the zoning amendment may be enacted, according to the appeal. The Findings of Facts indicated that the boat rental would require a minimum land area of 10,000 square feet but he property does not meet the required square footage, according to the appeal. In addition, Lakeside Creamery was not required to show that it met handicapped-parking requirements or that it was in compliance with any other applicable handicapped requirements, the appeal said.

During a May 31 public hearing on boat rentals, Meagher indicated that Lakeside Creamery had 56 parking spaces that will fit all uses of the facility.

The appeal also states that the boat rental permit is improper because it’s “detrimental to public welfare,” effects spot zoning, denies equal protection to property owners in the neighborhood and will damage the fair market value of those properties.

“This (zoning ordinance amendment) means that several new boat rental operations can now be added to Deep Creek Lake without adequate parking, space, fuel and launching and service facilities, which will decrease public safety,” said Carol Jacobs, president of Aquatic Center Inc.

The zoning ordinance amendment also means in essence that anyone with a dock slip can open a boat rental business, according to O’Brien.

“The decision, in effect, has created a new class of marinas (mini-marina) that is not subject to certain zoning requirements and restrictions,” said O’Brien in a interview with the Times-News. “By catering to one person they are opening Pandora's box — virtually anyone can open a marina.”

O’Brien further noted that his issue with the zoning ordinance ammendment was based on the principal of the matter rather than the competition aspect of the matter.

“I’m not in competition with Lakeside Creamery,” said O’Brien, who noted that Silver Tree Marine does not rent personal water crafts.

During a June 26 commission meeting, residents noted their opposition of the commissioners’ approval of Meagher’s request.

“You are allowing an ice cream place to become a boat rental place. I think that was totally unfair to the existing boat people,” said Steve Friend. “You are cutting their throats by just allowing someone to come in and rent boats.”

Friend questioned what the amendment would do for Bill’s Marine Service and if there would be problems if the marinas decide to open up ice cream stands.

“Should there be no zoning at the lake?” asked Commissioner Gregan Crawford in response to Friend’s question. “Is a zoning document not a living document that is open to new interpretation? Mr. Meagher had a better mouse trap. What was created was a new classification because it had never come up before.”

The creation of ice cream stands would likely fall under the health department’s regulations, according to Crawford.

Resident Linda Bowerbaugh noted that she felt like the amendment change was kept a secret from the public.

“It feels like to the public that the communication was not wide enough,” said Bowerbaugh.

Deep Creek Lake Policy and Review Board Chairman Dave Myerberg indicated at a recent board meeting that he wasn’t aware of the May public hearing either, according to Raley.

“That’s unfortunate,” said Raley. “We have tried desperately to improve that, and the truth of the matter is, it does rely on people using computers these days,” said Raley in response to Bowerbaugh.

Raley noted that he is open to suggestions on how to let the public know about matters that would affect property owners, especially those who may be absentee.

Zoning amendment angers Deep Creek Lake marina owners

Elaine Blaisdell Cumberland Times-News

OAKLAND — Despite opposition from multiple marinas at Deep Creek Lake, the Garrett County commissioners ap-proved an amendment to the Deep Creek Zoning Ordinance to add a new category for boat rentals as a separate service that would not offer any of the other services associated with a marina.

Upon suggestion of the planning commission and after receiving a request from Bill Meagher, owner of the Lakeside Creamery, to amend the ordinance, commissioners approved the amendment at their June 5 public meeting. Commissioners Gregan Crawford and Robert Gatto voted in favor of the amendment, with chairman Jim Raley opposing it. During a May 31 public hearing, Raley noted that he had concerns about Meagher’s decision not to offer services on-site.

Meagher plans to offer 12 personal water crafts and four pontoon boats as rentals as well as offer guided tours. He would use local marinas for services. After approaching the planning commission, he learned he would need a special exception to do so.

“We didn’t want to do sales, we didn’t want to do repairs, we didn’t want to do a lot of the things that the marina does. The only thing we wanted to do was a boat rental business,” Meagher said at the public hearing.

Ed Schofield, general manager of Deep Creek Lake Boat Rentals, noted during the hearing that Meagher’s decision to rely on the competition for services was perplexing.

“No way you can be part of this business and not have sales. You are kidding yourselves,” said Schofield.

Phil St. Moritz, owner and president of Bill’s Marine Service, indicated during the hearing that his business would not service Meagher’s boats.

“He (Meagher) said, ‘We are going to work with marinas.’ We are not going to service them,” said Moritz. “We are not going to launch them.”

St. Moritz noted that there are already too many boats in the water in that area with boat rentals from both Bill’s Marine Service and Deep Creek Marina, which provides rental operations to Will O’ the Wisp.

Meagher indicated that he could get services from Deep Creek Lake State Park and could hire a mechanic in-house. However, Meagher would have to go to a marina on the lake to purchase fuel or would have to fuel on-site.

“I want to work with the people here, but I get it if they are saying they don’t want to work with me,” said Meagher.

Silver Tree Marine, LLC and Patterson Boat Co. also opposed the amendment change, according to Carol Jacobs, president of Aquatic Center Inc., who also opposes the ordinance amendment.

“The marinas brought experts with decades of experience in the field of rentals and service, which were ignored by two of the three commissioners,” said Jacobs in an email to the Times-News. “Additionally, instead of obtaining a special exemption for his one property from the Zoning Appeals Board, he took a different route and requested a zoning ordinance amendment for all properties through the county commissioners. This means that several new boat rental operations can now be added to Deep Creek Lake without adequate parking, space, fuel and launching and service facilities, which will decrease public safety.”

During the hearing, Meagher indicated that Lakeside Creamery had 56 parking spaces that will fit all uses. Meagher said he heard all the concerns about safety and would take it under advisement.

“Our goal is that our customers and our guests would stay all on our property,” said Meagher. “We aren’t looking at them crossing the street. ... Our goal was to provide another service to the community that our guests are looking to have. Our space is very similar to other spaces in size and parking. We do have the ability to accommodate our guests.”

Bob Nickle, general manager of Bill’s Marine Service, asked, “How can you say no to one and yes to another? It (zoning ordinance) is to govern growth in the Deep Creek watershed. If you keep making small amendments to it, it’s not worth the paper it’s written on. I don’t think it’s fair that someone is requesting to change the rules mid-stream.”

The commissioners also received four letters of opposition to the amendment in the ordinance, according to Raley.

“To grant this individual an exception would do little to benefit anyone other than the individual at the cost of unfairly penalizing those of us who are willing to comply with regulations,” wrote Brian C. O’Brien of Silver Tree Marine in an email to the commissioners.

More Deep Creek Lake, Md. Boat Rentals Eyed

June 5, 2012 10:27 AM
OAKLAND, Md. (AP) — The Garrett County Commissioners are considering a proposal that would increase the availability of boat rentals on Deep Creek Lake.

The board is set to consider on Tuesday a zoning amendment requested by the owner of the Lakeside Creamery ice cream shop. It would permit boat and personal watercraft rentals at his business and other locations that lack marina services.

Creamery owner Bill Meagher says he would only rent out watercraft. He would not sell fuel or boats, store boats or make boat repairs.

At least four businesses on the lake currently offer watercraft rentals from their marinas.

The county planning commission is recommending approval of the plan.

Fathers Day at Deep Creek Lake 2008

I enjoyed a wonderful Fathers Day at Deep Creek Lake State Park over the weekend. We went for a picnic on Sunday and hung out near the state park beach. My daughter Kayleah played on the rocks and searched for different kinds of bugs and creepy cralwies. My grand parents were with me, as well as my in-laws. It was about 85 degrees and sunny, and the water is almost warm enough that it doesn't take your breath when you jump in...almost.

After the picnic, we went took the boat down to a friends house at Turkey Neck. There was a sailboat race in progress and we decided to do a little bit of fishing from the dock. I personally didn't catch anything, but I did witness my cousin lose a 12" bass as she tried to pull it up out of the water...it was entertaining, to say the least.

We wrapped up a sun filled day with some dinner from Grizzly Grillin & some ice cream from the Creamery (thanks for the Fathers Day FREE scoop, by the way!). Coconut & chocolate butter fudge go together better than you would imagine. I also have it on good authority that Bill Meagher, the owner of the Creamery, is working on beer flavored ice cream...stay tuned!

Maryland comptroller: Tourism business could be improved by drafting a new school schedule

Elaine Blaisdell Cumberland Times-News

— OAKLAND — During a Line at the Lake event, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot spoke to members of the Chamber of Commerce, local legislators and officials about an initiative that he is seeking to reconvene schools statewide after Labor Day.

The initiative will help Maryland families, small businesses and students, who can make a little extra money for back-to-school expenses, Franchot said.

The criticism of the initiative is that school would have to run later in June. Franchot stressed that school would still be completed by June 10 if it started after Labor Day, still allowing 180 instructional days.

“We just have to interject a little common sense, a little old-fashioned values, a little bit of concern for our small business community and an interest in our kids being able to earn a little bit more money,” said Franchot, during the event at the Lakeside Creamery on Monday. “I contend that the kids would be smarter academically because they have better quality time during the summer.”

Franchot held the Line at the Lake event because Bill Meagher, owner of the Lakeside Creamery brought the issue to his attention.

“I feel very passionately about this issue that (Meagher) introduced to me,” said Franchot. “The reason I am so passionate about this is because of families. When I was a kid, starting school before Labor Day was un-American. So, we started this statewide conversation and I think it’s going to pick up a lot of traction.”

The statewide conversation is a win-win for both small communities and the tourism business in the state, as both are dependent on the summer season for their profits, said Franchot.

Meagher echoed Franchot’s sentiments, adding that August is traditionally the best month for tourism.

First Vice Chairman of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Phil Rodeheaver of My Bank First United Bank & Trust stressed the importance of the initiative for the chamber.

The Chamber of Commerce plays a two-part role in the county, supporting both tourism and the business community, Rodeheaver said.

“This initiative picks up both of those and runs with them,” said Rodeheaver.

He said the school calendar change needs to be a state-run initiative.

“We are blessed to have one of the best school systems in the state, as well as the nation. I have no concern about the quality of education that my children will receive here in Garrett County. This change will precipitate benefits for both the tourism industry as well as the business community,” said Rodeheaver.

There are thousands of businesses that could benefit from the initiative, Franchot said.

Franchot will be asking for legislation to be submitted next year to standardize the change in the school calendar.

“I believe we will get a great response around the state. If all of you could pitch in and help us out and keep that conversation going,” said Franchot. “We will have a good conclusion.”

Chairman Jim Raley offered his support of Franchot’s initiative.

“I will do anything in my power — having been an educator — to work with state organizations to figure out some way to try to make this thing work for the whole state of Maryland,” said Raley.

Delegate Wendell Beitzel thanked Franchot for his thoughts.

“As you know, we are struggling up here, the ski area is having difficulty, the paper mill is having difficulty and businesses are really slow,” said Beitzel.

“We appreciate what you are doing to help businesses out here. You understand the needs of our business people, particulary the tourist area of the state. You understand what tourism means to the state of Maryland.”

Mike McKay, Allegany County commissioner, said there was a direct correlation between the economic climate of Garrett County and Allegany County.

“What is good for Garrett County is great for Allegany County,” said McKay.

Meagher echoed McKay’s sentiments. He said the school schedule had a ripple effect on the entire state, affecting all budgets in regard to the accommodation tax, sales taxes, rental taxes and home sales.

The problem with the state school calendar is its complexity, said Raley.

“One of the things that we need to look at is the archaic process that we have in the school calendar and try to figure out a way to make it work in Maryland. Especially since Maryland is the home of many pockets of tourism activities.”

Zoning appeals board upholds Deep Creek boat rental permit

Elaine Blaisdell Cumberland Times-News

OAKLAND — The Deep Creek Lake Watershed Board of Zoning Appeals voted three to one on Aug. 16 to uphold its June decision to issue a boat rental permit to Bill Meagher, owner of Lakeside Creamery, according to Garrett County Administrator Monty Pagenhardt.

Despite opposition from multiple marinas, the county commissioners voted on June 5 to approve an amendment to the Deep Creek Zoning Ordinance to add a new category for boat rentals as a separate service that would not offer any of the other services associated with a marina.

Commissioners Gregan Crawford and Robert Gatto voted in favor of the amendment, with chairman Jim Raley opposing it. During a May 31 public hearing, Raley said he had concerns about Meagher’s decision not to offer services on-site.

On Aug. 18, the Property Owners’ Association of Deep Creek Lake voted unanimously, with  president Troy Ellington recusing himself because of a conflict of interest, to request the commissioners to take three separate actions in regard to the amendment of the ordinance regarding boat rentals, according to Pagenhardt. Ellington is chairman of the county’s planning commission.

Pagenhardt, Commissioner Robert Gatto and John Nelson, director of the Department of Planning and Land Development, were in attendance at the POA meeting.

The Property Owners’ Association requested the commissioners initiate and complete within six months a comprehensive study of the amendment in consultation with the Department of Natural Resources and other interested organization to determine whether the amendment should be retained, modified or deleted, according to an email sent to the commissioners from POA senior vice president Roger Titus.

The group is also requesting that the commissioners impose a six-month moratorium on the issuance of any permits for any additional uses based on the recent amendment to the Deep Creek Lake Watershed Zoning Ordinance and the pending the outcome of the study; and adopt as a matter of county policy that no amendment to the text of the ordinance that may have an effect on the lake shall be approved until there has been notice of at least 90 days. The notice should be given to the DNR, the state Department of the Environment, the POA, the Friends of Deep Creek Lake and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, allowing them an an opportunity to respond, according to the email.

“The board of the POA believes that approval of theses actions will go a long way toward addressing the concerns that the POA and others have raised about the adoption of the ammendment,” wrote Titus.

Pagenhardt noted that the commissioners have received the email, are currently “taking it under advisement,” and are discussing with Nelson and County Attorney Norman Getty how to proceed. Pagenhardt also said the commissioners plan to answer the email but it hinges on upcoming legal action.

St. Moritz Properties, LLC; Bill’s Marine Service Inc., Silver Tree Marine, LLC, Aquatic Center Inc. and Deep Creek Boat Rentals Inc. have filed an appeal in Garrett County Circuit Court to determine whe-ther the commissioners acted properly under the zoning ordinance and Maryland law in approving the amendment in June. The case is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m.

The businesses filed the appeal in circuit court because they felt like they have been “specially and adversely affected” by the commissioners’ decision, according to the appeal.

St. Moritz Properties, LLC; Bill’s Marine Service Inc., Silver Tree Marine, LLC, have also filed a interpretive appeal in opposition of the Board of Zoning Appeals’s decision in June to grant Meagher’s request for a boat rental permit.

Chamber of Commerce marketing director

Enjoy the beauty of the fall season in the mountains as Maryland celebrates the 43rd anniversary of Autumn Glory with two large parades, concerts, band competitions, art exhibits, antique and craft shows, and much more from Oct. 6 to 10.

Known for scenic Deep Creek Lake and Maryland's only ski resort, the Wisp, Garrett County is also home to the annual Autumn Glory Festival, a five-day celebration of autumn that celebrates the beauty of the local fall foliage. From Wednesday through Sunday, the area offers a wide variety of things to do indoors or outdoors.

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce's annual Autumn Glory Kickoff Dinner featuring live musical entertainment and recognition of the annual Autumn Glory Golden Ambassador will kick off the festival on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Thursday features the Oktoberfest dinner and concert by the Oom-Pah Band and a firemen's parade.

The week continues with historic area tours, antique and craft shows, fine arts exhibits, both swing and oldies dances, a farmers' market, 5-K walk, storytelling and book festival, musical concerts, dogsled events, a quilt show, corn maze, art glass exhibits, outdoor adventures, shopping specials, and a wide variety of other activities.

The Official Maryland State Banjo Championship, Friday at 7 p.m., features banjo contestants of all ages competing for top honors.

Saturday, Oct. 9, offers musical entertainment in Oakland at the Front Page Stage, on Second Street near the post office, and on the Box Car Stage at the train station.

The Grand Feature Parade begins on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Oakland. Clowns, floats, bands, and plenty of sidewalk vendors increase the festival atmosphere. That day will also feature the Western Maryland Tournament of Bands at 6 p.m. with high school field show competition, as well as the State Fiddle Championship and Mandolin Contest at 7 p.m.

Antique and craft shows continue Sunday, joined by the Autumn Glory Festival Car Show in Oakland and a no-hands sundae eating contest at Lakeside Creamery.

Garrett County's annual Autumn Glory Festival landed in the international spotlight last fall when the popular travel web site MSN.com listed it tops among fall festivals in the world. To the delight of locals and visitors alike, Autumn Glory in Oakland beat out Paris' Festival d'Automne (#5) and Munich's Oktoberfest (#7) – in addition to a bevy of domestic celebrations, including San Francisco's Dias De los Muertos.

"Music, parades, and awesome colors are at the center of this festival," noted the site, plugging in particular the Grand Feature Parade, the Maryland State Banjo and Fiddle championships, and the Tournament of Bands.

For the past two years, travelchannel.com has also listed the Autumn Glory Festival and Garrett County as one of America's Three Best Autumn Road Trips, and in 2008, baltimoresun.com listed Garrett County as one of the top five locals for fall foliage.

Garrett unveils eighth barn quilt

Inaugural festival promotes driving tour through county
Kevin Spradlin
Cumberland Times-News

— ACCIDENT — Between scoops of Lakeside Creamery ice cream and impromptu toy tractor races among brothers, there was the first Barn Quilt Festival on Sunday at Cove Run Farms in Accident.

And Mike Dennis, for one, was pleasantly surprised at the turnout for the first-year event. A barn quilt is a quilt pattern painted or imprinted on a piece of wood and then displayed on a barn.

“This is a much, much bigger response than I think anybody anticipated,” said the Garrett County resident.

Dennis attended the festival, which promoted agriculture, heritage and the natural beauty of rural Mountain Maryland, to attract customers to his digital art and photography efforts. Dennis has taken photos in different seasons of several barn quilts around Garrett County. At least two more are set to be installed in the near future.

Dennis sells the photographs but also uses a cintique that provides a digital image with the pastel-like feel.

“It’s just a neat idea,” Dennis said of barn quilts. “A lot of these designs are unique to America. It’s part of our heritage.”

Area barn quilts highlighted at the festival include “Variation Star” owned by Bev and Taylor “Mike” Sines, “Ohio Star” owned by Wendell and Ruth Beitzel and “Turkey Tracks” owned by Johnny and Sue Logan.

“Turkey Tracks,” located on Boiling Springs Road in Deer Park, is a simple red, white and blue image that gives the impression of a turkey’s prints.

A “Turkey Tracks” photo taken converted into a pastel impression is one of his favorites, Dennis said. The photo was originally taken early this spring. But he plans to revisit the barn this fall and winter.

“You get something different” with the fall foliage and winter snow, Dennis said. “You get a whole different painting.”

The event was organized by the Barn Quilt Association of Garrett County Inc. Part of the festival was to make visitors aware of a self-guided barn quilt driving tour available around Garrett County. This Barn Quilt Trail is the first such driving tour in Maryland.

The tour can be done in a single afternoon or in segments and takes motorists through or near Grantsville, Bittinger, Accident and McHenry, then south to Deer Park.

The seventh barn quilt to be display is one that takes special care to highlight all four seasons. The quilt is called “Circle of Life in Garrett County.” The barn is owned by Kenney Signs Co., Frostburg, and is located between National Pike and Interstate 68 near Finzel.

Association members on Sunday unveiled the eighth and newest barn quilt, “Garden Maze,” placed on a barn near Cove Run Farm’s popular corn maze.

Karen Reckner, festival co-coordinator, and her fellow Barn Quilt Association officers believe the project can assist the local tourism effort and help preserve the area’s agricultural and cultural history.

Smileys Funzone at Deep Creek Lake - DCL FUN!

I was chatting on the phone last night with my good friend Megan Redinger, who is the manager at Smileys Funzone at the lake. For those of you who know Megan, she is a sweetheart & one of my best friends - a true 'Garrett County All Star'. She also pointed out that the folks at Smileys happen to be fans of this blog :) And the Funzone has ALWAYS been a cool place to hang out for kids (and big kids) of all ages. It was always a central meeting point for kids who went to school at Northern & Southern schools. I practically grew up there, worked there for a summer or two, and have a lot of fond memories of it. In fact, my wife, Jessica, and I met at Smileys when we were teenagers - who knew that we would get married one day? Anyway, I wanted to profile Smileys Funzone here and share a cool video that is 'virally' making it's way around Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County & beyond. Also, I LOVE the fact that they have a Railey Realty race car. (WARNING - shameless real estate plug) I've always heard that it was one of the fastest cars on the tracks, so if you really need to WIN, the Railey Realty car won't let you down :)

They have a very creative website, and it screams FUN! You can take a virtual tour here. Some more from their website:

Lakefront Buys Available In All Price Ranges

Lakefront property hasn't been this affordable since 2004! (email me for stats) Here is part of a post I recently put on the Railey Realty blog:

Lakefront prices haven't been this low for quite some time and there are some really great deals out there right now for any price range. Visit my website (i♥DeepCreek.com) or email me (deepcreeklaker@gmail.com) for more info on any of these Railey Realty listings!

Fractional ownership  has its advantages - being on the lake for $139k in one of the nicest lakefront townhome communities at Deep Creek Lake, Creekside, is one of them! Another advantage is the sweet Bennington pontoon boat they just purchased for owner usage - you pay only for the gas! It's not a timeshare; they work much differently and you actually own a deeded 1/8 share. They are professionally managed, incredibly well appointed, and now you can 'swap' time at other locations throughout the year, including Wisp Ski Resort, several locations in North Carolina and even Costa Rica. More photos here.

A Deep Creek Lake legend - Will o' the Wisp condominiums. A lakefront condo that is close proximity (~ 1/4 mile) to the Creamery, the Honi-Honi bar, Garrett 8 Cinema's and Arrowhead Deli & Grocery. First floor units are coveted because they walk directly out to the water, a sandy beach and your deep water dock slip. The hotel has a lakeside restaurant onsite, indoor pool, hot tub, fitness center, laundry facilities, outdoor swimming area and even an arcade. And they are income-producing! Front desk management and hotel staff make overnight & weekly rentals a breeze. More photos here.

I'm a huge Ski Harbor fan. That's the first community I ever invested in at DCL, and one of the biggest reasons was the location & amenities. There's over 1,700 ft of lakefront - more than virtually any other condo/townhouse community. It's surrounded by no-wake zones on both sides of a peninsula, meaning quiet and calm waters to kayak, fish or swim. Your dock slip just outside your door, and the best seat in the house for the 4th of July fireworks just across the water at Wisp. Add an indoor pool, tennis court & beach volleyball  - a great combination of amenities! More photos here.

2 bedroom lakefront cottage at Hazelhurst. You won't find a better lot in this price range with 2BR cottage already in place & a newer 2 car garage to park your boat and store your toys.
Mature trees offer plenty of shade and you have wide views of the lake on 50 feet of frontage. The Type A dock allows 2 power boats - most other homes in this range only have one boat slip available. And Hazelhurst is a great community to live in on the lake, tucked away on the southern shores of Deep Creek. More photos here.

Want to be closer to the action? This 3BR cottage on Rock Lodge has 1.59 acres of land and a whopping 228 feet of water front. This home is close to the Wisp Ski Resort and Deep Creek Lake State Park, as well as activities and restaurants. It was originally built in 1937 and upgraded over the years. It features solid wood beams and wood stove in the living room.  It also has a Type A dock, deep water and great views of the northern areas of the lake. You can watch boats passing by all day from your yard or your deck. More photos here.

Lakefront property with a newer home - Waltons Landing offers a quality home built by Nemith Builders. Built in 2008, this is a 3 level chalet and is decked out w/ custom granite, ceramic tile, hardwood floors and modern kitchen finishes. Lakefront area offers a 5-slip common dock & a 'no wake' cove. This property is in the heart of McHenry and is a very short distance to Ledo's pizza, McHenry Beverage Shoppe, and Funland. Wisp is just around the corner. Excellent potential to rent as a vacation home! More photos here.

Aug. 11, 2011

Firefly Farms, producer of goat cheeses from Maryland's Allegheny Plateau, has earned a top honor at this year's American Cheese Society's annual conference, which was held in Montreal, Canada.

FireFly's aged goat cheese, Mountain Top Bleu, received the first place ribbon, beating out numerous other blue-veined goat cheeses. The ribbon marked the 14th individual honor received by Mountain Top Bleu, which has been recognized by Saveur Magazine as one of its 50 favorite American cheeses.

"This is the 44th individual award for our FireFly Farms product line," explained Matt Cedro, head cheese maker.

"It always feels great to have our work recognized on the national stage. We are very proud of all our cheeses and to receive this type of recognition is wonderful."

"It all began nearly 10 years ago with a first-place ribbon for Mountain Top Bleu at the ACS in 2002," added Mike Kock, FireFly Farms president.

"As we move our creamery to Accident and prepare to expand our business, it's greatly fulfilling that Mountain Top Bleu has remained America's best."

Trail group looking at fundraising options after grant rejected

Celebration set May 1 to kick off spring hiking, cycling season
Kevin Spradlin
Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — A local trails organization’s grant request for $2,500 from The Home Depot Inc. has been rejected, leaving members looking for other fundraising options.

The funds would have purchased shovels, rakes, a chain saw and other tools and supplies for use along the 20.47-mile Maryland section of the Great Allegheny Passage. The request was one of many The Home Depot Inc. received, said Bill Atkinson, marketing chairman for Mountain Maryland Trails, and a reason as to why the application was rejected wasn’t given.

Atkinson said the group, which met Monday at the Queen City Creamery in downtown Cumberland, will consider reapplying for the same grant as well as others available, including a corporate grant program available through the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education.

MMT Treasurer Larry Brock suggested the group should focus on childhood obesity and exercise, which would work well with first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” anti-childhood obesity campaign announced one week ago.

In other trail-related news, the group discussed:

• A letter from the Mountain Maryland Trails board of directors will be sent March 1 to the Allegany County commissioners and Cumberland’s mayor and council requesting funding. A specific figure was not disclosed, but members said they plan to show the benefit from trail users doubling as customers for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and downtown Cumberland businesses.

• The Hyndman Trail, which is envisioned to pass through the Locust Grove area near the Narrows east of state Route 36. It’s unknown how the Great Allegheny Passage could connect to this possible extension but obstacles to overcome include an active CSX railroad line.

Brock said at least one landowner is “anxiously looking at donating the trail” to Allegany County government, which owns and maintains the Great Allegheny Passage from Cumberland to the Pennsylvania state line northwest of Frostburg.

• A Spring Kickoff celebration will be staged May 1 to mark the opening of the hiking and cycling season along the trail and C&O Canal towpath.

• Local businesses that believe they benefit from the trail network are to be invited to the first Trail Town Marketing Summit on March 15 at Windsor Hall in downtown Cumberland. The goal of the conference is to collaborate marketing initiatives and to put the regional Trail Town Program in a position to better respond to new and existing businesses along the trail network.

For more information on any of these issues, visit www.ahtmtrail.org.
