Northern’s Doerr finishes fourth

Husky senior shoots two-day total 147
From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News Fri Oct 29, 2010, 07:56 AM EDT

— COLLEGE PARK — Northern High School senior Austin Doerr finished in a four-way tie for fourth place in all classes in the Maryland High School Golf Tournament at the University of Maryland Golf Course and finished second among Class 2A/1A players as only one individual state champion is crowned overall in the state tournament.

On Tuesday, Doerr fired a first-round 73, just two shots off the lead and good for second place after the opening round of the tournament, then followed up Wednesday with a 74 to finish at 147.

Doerr concluded his high school golfing career as a three-time AMAC champion and a member of the 2009 and 2010 AMAC championship teams. He was a two-time Garrett County Invitational champion, finished fourth in the 2009 Distrist 1 2A/1A championship and won the 2010 District 1 2A/1A championship before finishing fourth overall in the state on Thursday.

Sixty-one golfers qualified for the state tournament and 36, based on Tuesday’s scores, qualified for the final round.

Doerr was the only golfer from Garrett or Allegany counties in the state tournament.

Wootton’s Connor Tendall shot a 71/72 for a two-stroke victory over his nearest competitors Bart George of Broadneck and Cas Dickerson of McDonough. Only four strokes separated all of the other top 10 boys medalists.

North Carroll took home the Class 2A/1A team title by eight strokes over runner-up McDonough by shooting a team score over the two days of 632. In Class 4A/3A, Urbana held off Damascus to retain the title they won last year by three strokes, 618-621.

Jul. 1, 2010

Local golfers are invited to don their favorite kilts and join in the first Fred Thayer Memorial Golf Tournament, slated for July 30 at the Thousand Acres Lakeside Golf Club. A kilted Pete Versteegen is pictured above as he readies a shot. Frederick A. Thayer III, retired judge for the Garrett County Circuit Court who was well known for pride in his Scottish ancestry, for his love of golf, and as an accomplished bagpipe player, died in 2006. This tourney in his memory is being sponsored by the McHenry Highland Festival. Thayer co-founded the Garrett Highlanders bagpipe and drum band in 1979 (now Garrett Highlands Pipes and Drums).

A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to a scholarship fund in Thayer's name, which was established in 2007. See story on today's sports link. To register, persons should go to www.highlandfest.info/golf.html by July 25.

Smileys Funzone at Deep Creek Lake - DCL FUN!

I was chatting on the phone last night with my good friend Megan Redinger, who is the manager at Smileys Funzone at the lake. For those of you who know Megan, she is a sweetheart & one of my best friends - a true 'Garrett County All Star'. She also pointed out that the folks at Smileys happen to be fans of this blog :) And the Funzone has ALWAYS been a cool place to hang out for kids (and big kids) of all ages. It was always a central meeting point for kids who went to school at Northern & Southern schools. I practically grew up there, worked there for a summer or two, and have a lot of fond memories of it. In fact, my wife, Jessica, and I met at Smileys when we were teenagers - who knew that we would get married one day? Anyway, I wanted to profile Smileys Funzone here and share a cool video that is 'virally' making it's way around Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County & beyond. Also, I LOVE the fact that they have a Railey Realty race car. (WARNING - shameless real estate plug) I've always heard that it was one of the fastest cars on the tracks, so if you really need to WIN, the Railey Realty car won't let you down :)

They have a very creative website, and it screams FUN! You can take a virtual tour here. Some more from their website:

Thousand Acres Golf Course Update from Bill Franklin

I received an email update from Bill Franklin on the progress of the new golf course at Thousand Acres:

"The front nine should be completed this fall with a planned opening summer of ’09 with the back nine to follow the next year. Golf holes 3,4,5,6, and 9 have been sodded around the greens, bunkers, and tees. There are a couple pics of the 8 bridges that cross the streams and wetlands in Thousand Acres….as a side note our wetland impacts are zero except for the bridge posts. Fairway and rough seeding is ongoing. As many of you know we have been talking about the golf course for 15 years or so with actual work on the ground the last three years…..clearing and grubbing, moving dirt, installing golf course drainage and irrigation, building roads and stormwater structures, building the irrigation pond and all the other stuff that goes into building a golf course. Three weeks ago the first tractor trailer load of sod arrives and in three hours the ground starts to look like a golf course….remarkable contrast."

Breakfast with Hale Irwin at Wisp Resort

My thanks go out to Karen Myers, Gary Daum, Steve Richards and the rest of the team collaborating on the new Lodestone Golf course at Wisp Resort. I was lucky enough to be a guest this morning at a breakfast where none other than Hale Irwin, 3 time US Open Champion was the guest of honor. Hale is in town to check in on the progress of his signature course at Deep Creek Lake. He spoke openly and answered questions about the project, as well as entertaining guests with some of his stories about working in the area. I got a chance to chat with him personally, and he currently resides in Arizona. Naturally, that lead me to ask about my favorite basketball team, the Phoenix Suns. He is a fan, by the way. Hale also confirmed to me that he meant what he said about Deep Creek Lake and our resort area in general - "There is truly no better place to have a home, or a 2nd home than here". Based on Hale's accomplished resume and his travels, that really registered with this Garrett County native as quite a compliment!
An interesting tidbit from reading up on Hale: He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992, and ranked in 2000 as the 19th greatest golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine!
