With appropriate pomp and circumstance, the noble Number 1 fire truck of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, a 1930 American LaFrance pumper, was on Tuesday officially housed in its new home, the soon-to-be-opened Garrett County Museum of Transportation. The museum, a project of the Garrett County Historical Society and funded significantly by the Naylor Family Trust, is set to be officially launched later this month, although the doors were opened for the firefighters and many residents who attended the evening ceremony. While some were saddened at the thought of Number 1 no longer being driven, officials explained that the engine can indeed still be used in parades and other events, as it now has a special gas tank that can be quickly attached or removed as needed. Good Will Fire Company staging annual fund drive

— The Good Will Volunteer Fire Company of Lonaconing is currently conducting its annual fund drive.

Residents and businesses in the area protected by the company should have received a letter asking for donations. These donations are used to assist in maintaining the equipment and property of the fire company.

The Good Will Volunteer Fire Company provides first due response to the area from just south of Fairgrieves Garage on Route 36 up to the old county roads garage property on Route 36 going north. We also respond to calls in Garrett County on Avilton-Lonaconing Road to the Little Brown Lake Road area and Swamp Road.

The fire company would like to thank all donors in advance of their support to their volunteers.

Maryland Firefighters Battle Apartment Fire

On Dec. 18, Allegany County Communications dispatched Engine 361 and Engine 221 mutual aid to Garrett County for a working apartment building fire.

The three-story building was located on West 1st Ave in Loch Lynn near Oakland, MD.

The multiple-alarm fire brought units from several counties and two states. Garrett County 911 dispatched Company 40, Engine 23, Engine 122, Engine 161 (RIT), Air 3, Ambulance 9-1.

Dispatch received numerous calls reporting a working fire on the third floor.

Chief 40A quickly reported that all occupants were out of the apartment building.

Captain 40 requested an additional truck out of station 120.

Engine Rescue 43 and Truck 44 responded from Station 40. Engine 31 transferred to Station 40. Truck 44 took up a position on Side A.

Engine Rescue 43 hit a hydrant at Alderson St and W 1st Ave and supplied Truck 44. Engine 23 supplied Truck 124 on Side C. Chief 40 established the command with Command with Chief 40A assuming operations.

Due to a limited water supply from the hydrant system, command requested four tankers to be dispatched on the assignment.

Fire Departments Are Recipients Of DNR Grants

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Service awarded its 2010 Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grants to 50 local volunteer fire departments across the state, including Garrett County's Bloomington VFC, Friendsville VFRD, and Gorman VFD.
The projects, to be funded in 15 Maryland counties, will assist volunteer fire companies with increasing capacity for wildland fire suppression needs in rural communities.

“The volunteer fire departments in our state are critical to ensuring the safety of Maryland families,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “I am heartened that we are able to support the work of these courageous volunteers and the lives, property and resources they protect.”

Projects to be funded include wildland personal protective equipment, skid units for building brush trucks, replacing small diameter fire hose, upgrading communications equipment, and the purchase of class A foam and other equipment to enhance wildfire suppression.

“The volunteer fire departments play a vital role in assisting our agency in protecting communities from wildfires,” said DNR state fire supervisor Monte Mitchell. “These grants help the volunteer fire departments increase their effectiveness and safety in combating wildland fires in Maryland.”

Grant funds provided by the USDA Forest Service funded 50 applications this year for $104,615 in match-funding to complete $259,617 in total project cost. The maximum grant award equaled 50 percent of the total project cost with a maximum of $3,000 grant per department.

Bloomington, with a total project cost of $2,800, received $1,400. Friendsville received $3,000 for a total project cost of $6,500. and Gorman received $2,960 for a total project cost of $5,920.
