Back in October, I spent some time in Garrett County chasing whitetails. The recent rains had the trails on our hunting lease wet and muddy. The logging operation on a section of the property had the main access road a clayey muddy mess.

A sure sign of spring is the arrival of various young wildlife babies throughout the forests and in the fields. Jessica Capan was horseback riding along Herrington Manor Road recently and caught sight of this spotted youngster lying low in the grass, and unlike most "children," he remained perfectly still for the taking of this photograph. With the arrival of summer this week, most of the spots on baby deer are beginning to fade, but as always, motorists should remain alert for the road crossings of deer, bear, ground hogs, and a host of other critters.

Buck kill down from past seasons

— CUMBERLAND — Wildlife officials on both sides of the North Branch of the Potomac River are looking at the significant declines in the number of bucks killed by gun hunters and some of them are trying to figure out just what happened.

In West Virginia, where the buck harvest is down 31 percent from a year ago and even more from previous years, Paul Johansen of the Division of Natural Resources believes it is a combination of things.
