Deep Creek Lake Fireworks July 4th, 2010

WOW. I have seen almost every display of fireworks at Deep Creek Lake & Broadford Park for the last 25 years or so - and last night's fireworks may have been the best ever. The grand finale was amazing. I shot a video of it (and lots of photos):



The setting is always amazing. McHenry Cove starts to fill up with boats at about 7pm or so. I arrived at Ski Harbor on my boat, guests of some clients whom I have worked with for years and from my time owning property there. You see all kinds of picnics, bonfires and party tents set up all along the shorelines of the lake; thousands of people enjoying the 4th of July and the festivities.

The water was really calm in the no-wake cove, and there were kids fishing off the docks and launching kayaks. We setup a picnic blanket and some lawn chairs and settled in for the show. The fireworks typically start at 9:30, so we had some time to kill and to enjoy the atmosphere.

My daughter Kayleah and her friend were fishing off the boat, Noah and his little buddy Wyatt were running around chasing ducks, throwing sticks and exploring the waterfront. We had packed a simple picnic basket with some snacks, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (YUM!) and birthday cake (Happy Birthday Jerry!). The food and company were great and before we knew it, the cove had filled with hundreds of boats and it was showtime...

The fireworks lasted about 30 minutes or so, and the smell of sulphur was drifting through the air. One of the most impressive things for me was the way the sound echoes through the valley and reverberates through the lake. You can hear LOUD echoes on a 1-2 second delay that ring all the way to Sky Valley (a client of mine reports that her dogs are NOT firework fans).

My son, Noah, is turning 3 next month and these were his 3rd set of fireworks he has seen from the lake, but this was by far his most interactive. He spent the first 5 or 10 minutes with his hands over his ears and then seemed to adjust well. You may be able to tell from the video, he was 'helping' me adjust the camera :)

When the fireworks were finished, we waited for the boat traffic to clear up, and the kids rode home safely in the car - it is a bit scary on the return trip on a boat with all of the traffic, etc. But, as far as I know, everyone made it home safe and happy - thrilled with the most impressive fireworks display Deep Creek Lake has seen in quite a while...thanks to Hugh Umbel for the show!!

Stay up to date with the real estate market-Garrett County-Deep Creek Lake

This link will show you the last 14 days of 'NEW' residential listings for Garrett County & Deep Creek Lake. I have had a few requests for something that shows ALL BROKER listings that are new to the market, so here you go :)

I can customize ANY search criteria you want, regardless of how detailed or basic, and send it straight to your email address - before most agents even know its available! This tool is invaluable and gives you an unbelievable advantage over other buyers currently looking to buy.

Playing on the ice at Deep Creek Lake

My daughter, Kayleah, and my wife, Jessica, were with me today as we ventured out on the ice at Deep Creek Lake. From what the ice fishermen were saying, the ice is about 12 inches thick on the main body of the lake. Our first experience was near Ski Harbor, and we were surprised to see 'Logan', a beautiful yellow lab, come sprinting from the Lakestar Lodge. His owner was right behind him, but the dog had no idea he was on ice the way he sprinted towards us with his tail wagging.

Next, Kayleah and I ventured out a little further on the ice in front of Traders Landing and High Mountain Sports. You could see that there had been plenty of snowmobiles leaving their marks on the ice and snow. Kayleah made a heart in the snow and it turned out to be a great picture, as you can see. It was FREEZING with the wind chill, so we only stayed out for 15 minutes or so. Overall, FUN DAY!

Ice fishing on Deep Creek Lake - 1-11-10

I noticed these folks fishing outside my office window today in McHenry Cove. From what I understand, the lake is definitely safe for ice-fishing now after almost 3 weeks of sub freezing temperatures. You can see the community of Ski Harbor in the background, and the approximate location of where the ice starts and land stops.

Video of Fireworks Finale

Here is an early attempt at video editing :) This is the finale of the fireworks the other night, shot from Ski Harbor. The most impressive fireworks display I can remember at Deep Creek Lake! Make sure to turn up your sound - the explosions would echo through the mountains and 2-3 seconds later you would hear the sound reverberation...

Deep Creek Lake Fireworks - July 5th 2008

For those of you who couldn't be here, as requested, here is a photo gallery of the fireworks. After getting rained out on a miserable July 4th, the fireworks at Wisp were re-scheduled for the 5th. We had been invited to watch with some friends at Ski Harbor, where I owned a place a few years back. There is really no better seat in the house than sitting in your boat by the shore in McHenry cove. After teaching my daughter how to cast her fishing pole without hitting anyone else on the boat (3 tries and a few close calls later...), darkness had set in and it was time for the show.


As you can see from the photos, they were really quite impressive. I believe that this was by far the best local fireworks display in recent memory. The lake water was really calm, not nearly as choppy as you might think with all of the boats gathered to watch. I have a cool video of the grand finale that I will post later on, but it gave me chills to see it and then hear EVERYONE in the McHenry area on land and water cheering and sounding horns, etc. Quite an experience! My 10 month old, Noah, was trying to reach out and grab the lights as the fireworks exploded - he had a great time on his first 4th (5th, really) of July!
