Rockets' Red Glare, and Lightning, Too!

Both man-made explosions and nature's own display were featured in the annual Fire On the Mountain July 4th fireworks last night at Wisp. The sky was quite alive with fireworks and lightning, as captured in this photograph, and had in fact just cleared enough for the show to begin at 9:30.

A severe electrical storm preceded the event, bringing hail and high winds (see additional picture). But the show did go on, and thousands were able to watch and provide the appropriate "oohs and aahs." Happy Independence Day, America! Photo by Fabian Green.

All Hail the USA

All hail let loose last evening just as festivities for the July 4th holiday were getting under way. An intense and damaging storm hit the Deep Creek Lake area at about 7:15 p.m., bringing high winds, torrential rain, and marble-sized hail. (And that's shooter marbles, not the little ones.)

The storm went on for more than 30 minutes, absolutely inundating the food tables at the Deep Creek Marina, which was offering a customer appreciation event. The food, catered by Wisp, was suddenly mostly soup, as shown, as the severe weather descended.

The annual Independence Day celebration at Garrett College by the Garrett Community Concert Band and the Garrett Choral Society was both abbreviated and relocated because of the storm. The performers and audience went into the college gymnasium, which is conveniently a storm protection area, and the program commenced inside. There is surely damage today in gardens and yards, as the hail was severe and the wind quite strong. Photo by Fabian Green.

There were a great many bombs bursting in air over the past weekend as Americans celebrated 235 years of United States independence. This photo was taken at Deep Creek Lake during the annual "Fire on the Mountain" event on July 4. Other fireworks displays were held in several locations throughout the county, as well as parades, parties, and picnics. The weather was fairly agreeable, although the actual July 4th skies were cloudy and full of rain at times throughout the day. But all in all, the country's birthday was celebrated in style on the mountaintop. Photo by Lisa Broadwater.

Accident Plans Annual July 4 Celebration

Accident's annual 4th of July Homecoming celebration will be held on Saturday, July 3, starting at 9 a.m. The celebration will begin with the Ecumenical worship service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church located at 102 S. Main Street. Following the service, the American Legion Post 208 will sponsor the raising of the state and American flags at the American Legion Memorial, located in the Accident Veterans' Park.

The Legion will also have a display of complete military uniforms from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War from noon until 5 p.m. in the American Legion meeting room on the lower level of the fire hall.

The annual parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will follow Main Street, starting on the northern end of town. Chicken dinners, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, ice cream cones, drinks, homemade pies, and a variety of sandwiches will be served at the Accident fire hall, starting at noon.

Throughout the day, there will be musical entertainment at the fire hall pavilion, starting at noon with the Garrett Highlands Pipes and Drums under the direction of Paul Browning. The Accident Concert Band will perform patriotic music at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., Black Diamond will perform bluegrass music at the pavilion. The guest speaker will be a member of the Western Maryland Military Family Support Group.

Deep Creek Lake Fireworks - July 5th 2008

For those of you who couldn't be here, as requested, here is a photo gallery of the fireworks. After getting rained out on a miserable July 4th, the fireworks at Wisp were re-scheduled for the 5th. We had been invited to watch with some friends at Ski Harbor, where I owned a place a few years back. There is really no better seat in the house than sitting in your boat by the shore in McHenry cove. After teaching my daughter how to cast her fishing pole without hitting anyone else on the boat (3 tries and a few close calls later...), darkness had set in and it was time for the show.


As you can see from the photos, they were really quite impressive. I believe that this was by far the best local fireworks display in recent memory. The lake water was really calm, not nearly as choppy as you might think with all of the boats gathered to watch. I have a cool video of the grand finale that I will post later on, but it gave me chills to see it and then hear EVERYONE in the McHenry area on land and water cheering and sounding horns, etc. Quite an experience! My 10 month old, Noah, was trying to reach out and grab the lights as the fireworks exploded - he had a great time on his first 4th (5th, really) of July!
