SHA cleaning, painting 8 Garrett bridges

GRANTSVILLE — The Maryland State Highway Administration has begun a project to clean and paint eight bridges in Garrett County.

Most work will occur below the bridges; however, daytime single-lane closures could happen Mondays through Thursdays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Fridays from 6 a.m. to noon. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. The projects should be completed by fall, weather permitting.

Titan Industries of Baltimore was awarded the $1.2 million contract to work at the following locations.

• State Route 38 over the North Branch of the Potomac River in Kitzmiller.

• Water Street over the Youghiogheny River in Friendsville.

• East and westbound spans of Interstate 68 over Water Street and the Youghiogheny River.

• Frost Road over I-68 near Grantsville.

• U.S. Route 219 over I-68 in Grantsville.

• East and westbound spans of I-68/U.S. 219 over Shade Hollow Road in Grantsville.

SHA recently announced road work and bridge projects in Allegany County as well with a $3.3 million contract for improvements at the U.S. Route 220/I-68 interchange. SHA will spend $879,000 for bridge paintings in the county and $850,000 to upgrade traffic barriers in both Allegany and Garrett counties.

Bridge Completed in Friendsville

A safe passage for pedestrians wanting to cross Bear Creek into Friendsville Town Park is now available, as the town took delivery just yesterday of this new bridge, which was immediately installed on Rt. 53/Second Avenue. Mayor Spencer R. Schlosnagle said that this route is heavily traveled by those going to and from the park, including persons from the Head Start/Senior Center and an apartment complex.

The bridge will also be an important segment for the proposed hiking/biking trail from Confluence, Pa., through Friendsville along the Youghiogheny River and south to Oakland. The town received $122,240 for the design/engineering and construction of the 8' x 65' bridge as a Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development block grant. The bridge was built by Crane Materials, International/Gator Bridge Division out of Atlanta, and consists primarily of aluminum materials. The contractor for the construction of the bridge abutments and installation was BYCO of Grantsville. "We could not have accomplished this without the help of concerned citizens and various groups who provided letters of support, as well as individuals from various county and state agencies," said Mayor Schlosnagle. Swallow Falls Road Bridge Scheduled For Opening Today

The Garrett County Roads Department expects to reopen the Swallow Falls Road bridge site to vehicular traffic today, Thursday, Nov. 10, at approximately 3 p.m., general roads superintendent Jay Moyer announced earlier this week.

"Everything's pretty much back to normal, except that traffic across the new temporary bridge will be one way and foot traffic is discouraged," he noted.

Vehicles traveling northeast on Swallow Falls Road will have the right of way across the bridge. Those traveling southwest will have to yield to oncoming traffic.

Moyer requested that pedestrians not cross the bridge, as there is no space available for them to safely do so. Swallow Falls State Park visitors are asked to drive their vehicles into the park.

The temporary bridge will once again allow combination vehicles carrying legal loads up to 80,000 pounds/40 tons to cross over the Youghiogeny River on Swallow Falls Road.

The site was closed in late September because the old bridge had deteriorated to the point where it would have failed the next inspection. There was no immediate funding available for a new bridge, so a temporary one, already owned by the county, was installed by the Roads Department.

• What to do: When the National Road was a major route to everywhere west of the Appalachian Mountains, the Casselman River Bridge was considered a marvel of technology. When completed in 1813, the 80-foot bridge was the longest single-span stone arch in the United States. Some thought it wouldn't stand for long, but the bridge carried foot traffic, animals, carriages, wagon and ultimately automobiles and trucks until 1933. It's no longer open to vehicular traffic. The 4-acre park, east of Grantsville in Garrett County in Maryland's northern panhandle, is a popular attraction for photographers, fly anglers and history buffs.

Garrett bridge will be replaced

OAKLAND — The Swallow Falls Road Bridge that crosses the Youghiogheny River will be closed beginning Monday at 9 a.m. due to its continued deterioration, the Garrett County commissioners announced.

The county roads department will install a temporary bridge within the next six weeks that will accommodate loads of up to 40 tons.

Deep Creek Stream-River - exploring Garrett County & Deep Creek Lake

I just listed a lakefront house on Stockslager Rd today, and on the way back, I wanted to snap a few shots of the bridge that crosses Deep Creek. Not the Deep Creek Lake bridge, but the small little stream/river/creek that is the namesake of Deep Creek Lake. I plan on exploring more this summer, but I wanted to share some of the cool photos that I got today. It's tough to see the water as the trees are all grown up and it's very wooded, but you can see that it's there. This is the stream that pickups the runoff from the Deep Creek Dam and dumps that water into the Youghiogheny River. You'll notice the smaller steel bridge that used to be there, as well. The trees have grown up through it. Stay tuned - I hope to hike the stream down to the Yough and report back here ina few weeks when the leaves are out in full bloom. Enjoy!
