Indeed, this is a scene that speaks for itself, a lovely moment in time, a cold December evening, quiet except for the telltale light on in the house. Someone was busy. Making Christmas cookies, perhaps? Wrapping gifts? Signing cards? It certainly is the time of year for any and all. Here's hoping all our readers are enjoying the tasks of this holiday season, as they prepare for the big day. This was taken by Lisa Broadwater along Rt. 219 in
Accident.

Random Photos of a farm setting in Accident

These are some random photos from a house on Brobst Rd in Accident. It was a hot & hazy day, but I loved the way the mountains looked with the fields, trees & the big red barn in the distance...I LOVE Garrett County farms! I hope to have one of my own one day...

Other than the extremely hard work (that is never ending), I have always liked the idea of growing my own food, raising livestock and 'working the farm'. A seemingly simpler life :)

Ten Oddly Named Small Town Travel Destinations - sawfnews.com

Accident, Maryland. Photo Credit: Garrett County Chamber of Commerce

Accident, Maryland
Accident is a town in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. The population was 353 at the 2000 census.

A person from Accident is called an "Accidental".

The town of Accident is located near Deep Creek Lake in northern Garrett County, the westernmost county of Maryland.

The unusual name of the town has an interesting story.

In 1750 King George II of England paid off a debt to George Deakins by giving him 600 acres of land in western Maryland.

To make the best of the opportunity, Deakins dispatched two independent survey teams to scout for the most promising land in that section of Maryland. When the teams returned it was discovered that they had marked the exact same 600 acres, even starting with the same oak tree.

A delighted Mr. Deakins had the location patented as "The Accident Tract."

The town is best known for The Drane House, which was constructed circa 1800 by James Drane, the first permanent settler in the Accident area.

Located on a high ground to the east of the town, approximately 150 yards from the Accident-Bittinger Road and one-half mile east of U.S. Route 219, it is believed to be the oldest standing structure in Garrett County.

The Drane House was purchased by the Town of Accident in 1987, reconstructed and preserved on the original site, and dedicated in 1994.

Recreational activities such as rafting and climbing programs from Adventure Sports Center International offer a more varied experience.

Recent Boating Crashes Reported On Deep Creek

courtesy Republican News

Jul. 24, 2008

The Maryland Natural Resources Police investigated two recent boating accidents on Deep Creek Lake, one of which resulted in injuries.
Susan M. Muscleman, 41, Orrtanna, Pa., was admitted to Garrett Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and Nichole S. Reed, 23, Gettysburg, Pa., was treated and released following a boating accident Tuesday evening.

Aaron G. Mummert, 32, Hanover, Pa., was operating an 18-foot outboard motor boat with three passengers around 11:30 p.m. in McHenry Cove when he struck a 24-foot pontoon boat in the stern. Police said Mummert's vessel became airborne and landed in front of the pontoon boat.

Mummert was charged with negligent operation of a vessel, failure to maintain a proper lookout, failure to operate at a safe speed, and failure to obtain a certificate of boating safety education. A court date of Oct. 30 has been scheduled for Mummert in Garrett County District Court.

The Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company, Northern Garrett County Rescue Squad, and Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad assisted NRP with the incident.

A second, unrelated accident was reported on Saturday, when Che F. Moore, 38, Verona, Pa., struck the stern of a pontoon boat while operating a rented personal watercraft on the main body of Deep Creek Lake. The pontoon was being driven by Kevin Beattie, Pittsburgh, Pa. According to reports, no one was injured in the 4:30 p.m. collision.

NRP charged Moore with negligent operation of a vessel and operating a personal watercraft at greater than 6 knots within 100 feet of another vessel.

NRP reminds boaters of the Maryland law that requires anyone born on or after July 1, 1972, must possess a certificate of boating safety education in order to operate any motorized vessel. This certificate is non-renewable and must be carried by the person at all times while operating a vessel. Officers may ask to see the certificate during a vessel check, and, if not provided, a person can be charged with a minimum of $25 for the first offense and up to $500 for each offense thereafter.
