THIS IS the third in a three-part series about day trips.
Traveling has become something of a ritual in responsibility for me. It seems I can't go farther than the grocery store without a Garmin to guide me and a multitude of itineraries, back-up plans and emergency contacts in tow.
There was a time, about five years ago, when I traveled across the Atlantic, canceled my flight back home and happily roamed foreign lands months longer than expected -- with not a checklist in site.
I don't know what kind of voodoo magic burgeoning adulthood cast on me between now and then that makes planning out possible ventures on Google Maps' street-view a requirement, but I aim to change it.
With that in mind, I decided to pick a place for my day trip and plan little else.
After a chat with my friend, I settled on the Deep Creek Lake area in Garrett County, Md. Not exactly a trek across the Amazon, true, but you gotta start somewhere. And a beautiful lake, only an hour away, with some of the easiest directions I've ever encountered, seemed a perfect first step.
