Two Garrett County post offices are among the 3,653 around the country that are tentatively slated for closure, according to the financially struggling U.S. Postal Service.
The USPS, which has been losing billions of dollars as more people communicate online, said Tuesday that it is considering closing 12 percent of its post office locations and working with local businesses to fill the void.
The local POs on the list are those that currently serve Bloomington and Bittinger.
The post offices are those that have been labeled as having "low activity," which means low foot traffic, average sales of less than $50 per day, and less than two hours of work per day. Most are located within five miles of another post office location, and the great majority of them bring in less than $27,500 in annual revenue.
Among Allegany County post offices on the list are those of Cresaptown, LaVale, and Cumberland Station A. The Bayard, W.Va., post office is also included.
